Daleene Menning

A ceramic artist who makes Art for Architecture

Daleene's most recent work, entitled:

The Ride:

involved designing and creating a 50 ft. x 4 ft. mural, made from nearly 1500 porcelain, handmade

relief tiles, with colored, fired clay surfaces, for the Central (bus) Station in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Statement of The Assignment:

“Create a work of art, using a bus transportation theme that enhances the

architecture of the building and welcomes patrons using overland and The Rapid buses.”

The artist chose to show scenes that can be seen while riding The Rapid buses to

illustrate the beauty of Grand Rapids, suggesting the bus routes with the blue street

line and representing the Grand River symbolically in the border.

Wait for video to load

This 3-minute video illustrates all the steps that 9 artists spent more than a year completing in order to produce the mural The Ride.  The video may load slowly the first time.

Then watch it a second time (it usually runs smoother the second time since it now is fully downloaded) after clicking on the right-most button of the video player which looks like

Then enjoy the video a second time while listening to the music Every Day At The Bus Stop (what else?).

Turn up the volume – it has a nice beat!
